First Ever Cosplay Competition

Wanna be in YAFGC?

The entries came rolling in, and we're thrilled at the kind of workmanship our dedicated fans were willing to display! Despite the notable lack of hot female drow, we did receive a couple of utterly delicious Wolfs (Wolves? Wolfii?), a remarkable Glon, and one crazy bastid who made a full-body Beholder getup! You are all insane, and we love every one of you.

Our winner: Tom (our forum-goers know him as the ever-fabulous Kashim!) as Wolf, Drow Warrior!

Tom Says: "[T]he chainmaille shirt I made in a euro 4in1 weave with 14 gauge etched aluminum with copper decorations on the sleeves. Wolf’s armor was white and aluminum seemed to be the best match. It was made especially for the competition, as the rest of my maille is made from steel and is dark gray.

"The tabard is made from red canvas and the spider was drawn on with a fabric marker.

"The sword is homemade. The hilt is made from clay and reinforced with steel wire. The scabbard was made from cheap plywood for a different costume a few years back. For this costume I covered it in white fabric and glued it down. The spider web motif was later put on with 3-D fabric paint, giving it a nice raised feel. There is no actual sword however, the hilt is just stuck on the scabbard with some wire, wanted to make it con-safe ya know.

"The boots are altered from an old pair of biker boots I had, I removed the metal decorations that came with the boots and added the top little flap thingie. The pants are leather."

Molly Says: "I'm wearing latex prosthetic ear points and a prosthetic orc nose, as well as a white Renaissance-style shirt with a black jerkin over it, brown pants, and black bucket boots. I also naturally have an underbite, which does marvels for showing off the trademark half-orc grin.

"I can't claim to have made the prostheses--both the nose and the ear tips were ordered from Aradani Costumes. I've made a few other such pieces in my time, though, including a full-face scar for a friend (done from a plaster cast of her face using clay to model the features on the cast). The pants are from my closet, but I added the bucket tops to a pair of old fashion boots by cannibalizing the leather from another pair of boots that were well past their prime, cutting out the bucket tops according to a pattern that I'd made, and sewing them on to the tops of the boots that I'm wearing in the pictures. The shirt and the vest are both homemade from patterns, and the hair is my own and natural (I've been growing it out for years)."

Steve Says: "My name is Steve Balmer; my wife Tina is wearing the costume in the pictures. She asked me to build it last year for Halloween but I did not have time. I started it this year on July 5th so that I could finish it for the Fan Expo convention here in Toronto on Aug 24th.

I built the costume by starting with a frame built out of hula hoops attached to a chest harness. I built up the frame with pipe insulators and then coated it with a skin of thin foam and duct tape. I cut out large section of thicker foam to make the round "chitinous plates" which I glued on with latex based carpet glue. The veins between the plates are window and door spray foam (which is flexible) and the eyestalks are foam pipe insulators wrapped in red medical gauze tape; the eyeballs are glow in the dark eyeballs from Party packagers. The big eyeball is a Halloween prop that lights up, looks around and makes noise. The tentacles on the bottom are more of the red medical tape.

I covered the body and eyestalks with more carpet glue to give the foam a fleshy texture and cover over the duct tape lines. Then I painted it with a mix of paint types (spray, latex house paint mixed with floor wax, clear coat etc.)

I even installed a battery powered fan inside to help keep Tina cool while wearing it."

Honorary Mention!

Feran Eldritch Knight Says: "I wasn't PLANNING to make a costume from the strip, it just kinda happened. I had this red tunic shirt lying around, had a white wig from an attempted InuYasha costume from a few years back, and the inspiration hit me at 6:30 am. As an afterthought, I decided to add a black spider to my shirt to go with the drow theme I had brewing. Then I opened my laptop and saw the subliminal inspiration for the costume- Wolf. I had forgotten that his tunic had a spider on it, and planned a Wolf costume unintentionally. Either way, I submitted the one pic I had taken even though it was late and only one angle. I didn't do it with the intentions of being entered as much as I just wanted to share."
